Degreasing and Passivation of Stainless
Steel
In the past number of years pharmaceutical, electronic and food processing firms
have insisted
that all new stainless steel piping and equipment should be degreased and
passivated after installation. This work is commonly included as part of the
mechanical installation contract. In order to compete for this type of business,
mechanical engineering contractors often find themselves having to provide this
service, which is not part of their regular business.
Though not a complex process in itself, the procedures
required for this work are complicated by the following factors:
- This is often a once off process, requiring the use of
temporary equipment and piping.
- There are a number of safety issues that will need to
addressed. The chemicals and the temperatures required for the procedure,
makes the process potentially hazardous.
- Clients often demand a rigorous testing procedure.
- Often the design of the piping, makes the design of
logical cleaning circuits a difficult process.
- Disposal of spent reagent chemicals and rinse water is
often a problem.
Water Technology Limited have been involved in this type
of activity for over ten years, and have tackled project both on site, and at
our premises in Togher, Cork.
